Summary
"N the days following 9/11, mental health professionals from all over the country flocked to New York to help handle what everyone assumed would be a flood of trauma cases. Oddly, the flood never came. In The End of Trauma, pioneering psychologist George A. Bonanno argues that we routinely fail to predict the psychological response to adverse events because most of what we understand about trauma is wrong. For starters, it is not nearly as common as we think. In fact, people are overwhelmingly resilient to adversity. For decades, we have overdiagnosed post-traumatic stress in part because we've never really understood how people cope. This book seeks to change that by introducing a new model of the coping process called the flexibility sequence, a series of steps we take in order to understand how to best meet the challenges of specific situations. Flexibility is not an innate ability or personality trait but a natural feature of the human mind. By learning how it works, we can better understand the roots of trauma, and ultimately learn how to make ourselves more resilient in the future."--, Provided by publisher
